When we first started digitizing books from our Irish Famine collection in 2002, we were quick to claim the title: "World's largest supplier of books about the Irish Famine free on the web." That was easy to prove because nobody else had added more than a single title, so our handful of titles won the prize. We have now officially handed that title to Google Books. We recently made a very focused search for books with Ireland in the title that made references to the Great Hunger. We found more than 90 hits for titles that were completely available online.
Now that we know that Google is providing vast storehouses of books on every subject, the question becomes: "How do we lead our users to this?" Our first answer was to use the online catalog to create a dynamic link to these titles
In QCAT. We can foresee a big project of creating such records for the works of
Mark Twain, Shakespeare, Dickens and so on.
